South Upi is known for the culture of the Teduray people, one of the Indigenous communities with deep roots in the area. The municipality is characterized by forests, rivers, waterfalls, and mountain landscapes that offer strong potential for nature and cultural tourism. A 2025 Bangsamoro Parliament bill proposed renaming the municipality Teduray to further recognize its indigenous identity, but the proposed name change still requires the legal process for approval.
