The Subok

During Holy Week

The Subok is a fascinating Holy Week tradition observed in Taytay and Tanay, Rizal. After the Good Friday procession of the Santo Entierro (dead Christ), male devotees insert various objects like medals and handkerchiefs into the image's robes. The "subok" or testing follows, where these men test the efficacy of their newly acquired talismans or amulets using whips and blades in a display of folk belief.
